With computer graphics imaging becoming more lifelike and realistic in todays society, filmmakers in the motion picture industry are now able to create animated characters who could conceivably take the place of human beings or people in leading roles onscreen. Nonliving stars are not a completely and totally unknown quantity, of course. Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are cartoon characters who earned millions of fans in spite of the fact that they did not exist in the real world outside of an animation studio. King Kong, who was the first stop-motion animation star, thrilled and delighted audiences beginning in the decade of the 1930s because of the fact that he was believably realistic at that point in time. However, modern innovations in computer graphics make cartoons and stop-motion characters look quaint and dated. At the present time, filmmakers are resolved and determined to create synthespians who will look, move, speak, and talk in such a realistic manner that audiences will be awed, and studios are enlisting animators with expertise and experience in computer graphics rather than traditional old-fashioned cartoonists to model the new breed of cyber-actors. Some film and movie critics are of the opinion that filmmakers are failing to grasp something vital and important, which is that audiences want genuine and honest emotion and creative storytelling rather than whiz-bang special effects and computer graphics. They argue that no computer-generated synthespian will ever really matter or be important to filmgoers unless his or her films are well written and well-directed.
