In order to make productive improvements in our Education system, it is first necessary to decide, as a society, what it is that we want our Educational system to accomplish or what purpose we want it to serve. Such a time of decision-making naturally leads to debate and creates an opportunity for a wide variety of views to be considered. Having just completed your own secondary education, you are in a position to bring a very important view to this subject. You should review the discussion in our Critical Thinking text about ways that some educational practices discourage critical thinking. You should talk with your peers, read articles, watch the news and reflect on your own priorities to help you arrive at a conclusion about what you think our school systems should be accomplishing. Remember you are only arguing v (train a labor force, train students to live in a particular society, keep our children safe and off the streets until they can mature, etc.)and why this function is important to the larger community; you are not responsible for explaining “how” this can be done. In a 1000-1250 word essay, you will argue what role you believe education should play within our society. Your essay must clearly locate the reader mentally, establish your voice of authority and take a stance. Your stance must be supported from at least three perspectives, and your argument must include a concession/refutation.

You should use at least two outside sources in this essay, and you must follow MLA documentation guidelines and include a works cited page. Your paper must be double-spaced and submitted to turnitin on or before the close of this unit.
