Elizabeth decided to enter her daughter Tammy into the Little Miss Beauty pageant. Once the rehearsals began Tammy became friends with another contestant, Shelby. After several months of pageant rehearsals, Elizabeth, and Shelby's mother, Sherry began to notice that the judges favored another contestant named Betsy.

Elizabeth and Sherry decided to go to dinner in order to discuss how to handle Betsy. After several hours of drinking, Elizabeth and Sherry decided that they would eliminate Betsy from the pageant in order to give their daughters a chance to win.

The next evening after the pageant rehearsal, Sherry told Betsy that she needed to speak to her outside. Elizabeth, who was in her car with the motor running, was waiting for Sherry to bring Betsy outside in order to run her over with her car. When Betsy went outside and Elizabeth started to drive her car directly at Betsy, Betsy seeing the car coming jumped out of the way, and only scratched her knees when she fell on the sidewalk.

However, Vickie, another pageant participant who was talking to other girls did not see the car and was struck by Elizabeth's car as she sped away. Vickie was killed immediately by the impact.
