Ellas is a wellknown, reputable clothing retail group in South Africa with stores throughout the country. This retail group strives to meet its performance targets by building and maintaining its customer base. For years, Ellas has built its unique reputation supported by its key brand values quality, style and elegance. The companys reputation for quality derives not only from its superb style of clothing, but also from its relentless pursuit of excellence in its service to customers.
The top management at Ellas believes that organisational results stem from high performance. It needs people who are looking for an exciting and rewarding longterm career with responsibilities and prospects. Its challenge is to find and retain employees with the right mix of skills and abilities who can be developed to become the managers of the future. The managers at Ellas have come from all walks of life and started out with various levels of qualifications.
The purpose of training and development is to improve the performance of employees to enable Ellas Clothing to meet its business goals. Training is about gaining the skills needed for a job. These may be learned at the place of work or away from work.
Human Resource development HRD is highly recognised at Ellas and they view HRD initiatives as an effective mechanism to improve performance and competitive advantage. The HRD department strives to perform all HRD functions to achieve success and effectiveness. The focus is to develop employees sales skills which leads to increased sales when they return to the shop floor. Eric Gumede was appointed as the HRD manager at Ellas Eric and his team will have to work closely with the operational managers to better respond to their needs.
One of Erics tasks is to implement a South African quality management model that assesses the companys efficiency and effectiveness; and identifies business areas that need improvement so that it can achieve higher levels of competitiveness in the global marketplace. There is also a major weakness in the companys HRD policy in that there appears to be an incoherent policy framework and poor evaluation of interventions. The HRD policy is often misinterpreted by staff and line managers which results in inconsistent application which prompts complaints among staff.
Eric Gumede also aims to conduct a review of the management development programs to ensure they are aligned with their business values and to enable managers to gain the skills and competencies required in the company. This review process will also ensure that they develop consistent skills across the company. It was found that the organization uses mentoring and coaching as developmental methods for managers; and he identified that mentoring has not been very effective in developing managerial skills. Eric feels that offthejob training methods were important to develop the managerial employees since they desperately needed to develop their problemsolving, planning, organization, teamwork, and selfcontrol skills.
Despite Eric's HRD plan for Ella's Clothing, he is faced with many challenges in the professional environment. Firstly, Ellas Clothing continues to expand its workforce and operations, and the growing diversity of employees may pose challenges in aligning HRD initiatives with the diverse needs, backgrounds, and expectations of the diverse workforce. Secondly, as Ella's clothing aims to be recognized in the global marketplace, globalization presents challenges in adapting Ella's clothing initiatives to international standards while adapting to the diverse cultural contexts within the organization. Thirdly, the rapid pace of technological progress may challenge Ellas clothing in ensuring that HRD programs are current and relevant. Finally, climate change awareness and sustainability concerns may affect organizational priorities.
The managing director at Ellas Clothing strongly believes that the HRD manager will play a vital role in achieving all the HRD efforts in the organization and maintaining the companys reputation by ensuring that the employees and managers are equipped with the skills and abilities to achieve business goals.
