EMPLOYMENT LAW: OSHA
React to the answer below for the following questions:
- Do you believe that on a whole OSHA is effective?
- What areas do you believe improvement is needed (ie the bad) and in what ways do you believe OSHA excels (ie the good)? - - Do you have any personal insight or experience with OSHA that you would be willing to share with the class that might bring insight to this discussion? (If not, that is okay too).
ANSWER:
"From what I've read, I think that OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) does a lot of good things, but they could do some things better. On the bright side, OSHA's enforcement actions, such as checks and fines, have helped lower the number of injuries and illnesses that happen at work. Also, OSHA's rules and standards have made people more aware of and encouraged the best safety and health practices in the workplace. The agency's whistleblower protection program has also been a very important safety net for workers who report violations or unsafe situations.
But there are some things that OSHA could do better. For example, some critics say that OSHA's fines for violations are too low to really stop people from breaking the rules. Also, OSHA doesn't have a lot of resources, which can make it harder for it to do checks and make sure people follow the rules. Also, there are still a lot of deaths and injuries in some industries, like construction and agriculture. This means that these areas need more attention and focused interventions. Even though I haven't worked directly with OSHA, I know how important it is to have strong and effective safety and health regulations at work to protect workers' health and prevent needless harm."
