The project activities will start with assessing the feasibility of an idea before turning it into a business opportunity with a commercial value. The opportunity should lead to product development, market testing and soliciting customer feedback before completing a Business Canvas Model to demonstrate the product will be commercialized. Most of the activities focus on the application of theoretical concepts and understanding these concepts from a practical perspective. The project relies substantively on interactive and collaborative group work.

The Project Challenge Students are required to create a product by applying the steps involved in the product development process as demonstrated in the following five major stages. The process will equip students to understand how to develop a new product from concept to reality. Part A: Transforming an idea to a Business Opportunity Students are required to apply the major five stages of product development in a practical and realistic manner. Each group will provide evidence to support the feasibility and viability of the product, the problem the product is addressing and the value offered by the product. The evidence will be in the form of pilot testing and customer survey results, a visual product and plan for commercializing the product using E-commerce. Stage 1: Idea Stage Brainstorm and identify a practical product idea and use SWOT analysis technique to evaluate your idea in terms of the value, need and the solution offered. Stage 2: Concept Stage Conduct a small scale pilot test with a small group of potential customers to assess customer acceptance for your idea. The test can be used as a tool to validate a market need. Stage 3: Product Development Develop a product with enough features that are viable and able to fulfill customer needs. The design of the product should be creative with captivating visual images which can help you gauge customer interest and reaction. Stage 4: Test Marketing Stage Apply the process associated with test-marketing through conducting a survey with a minimum sample of 20 potential customers to assess the market demand for your product. The survey should include a feedback form which can be used as a tool to learn more about customer needs and help you to improve your product. Stage 5: Commercialization Create a Business Canvas Model to illustrate how you will commercialize your product. The model should elaborate how you will use E-commerce channels to deliver your product to the market. The Model is shown as an Appendix on the last page of this assessment.
