Entering Calculations in your Calculator: As simple as it might seem to enter calculations into your calculator, there are several easy mistakes that can lead to incorrect answers. The most common of these mistakes involves entering multiplication and division. One of the methods of problem solving that we are going to focus on this semester is called dimensional analysis, which involves setting up successive ratios in a line and then entering values into your calculator . A typical set-up might look like this: 1 qt 0.01661 ton x- 2000 1b 453.59 g 1 ml 1 fl oz I ton 1 1b 0.789 g 29.57 ml 32 fl oz There are several right and wrong ways to put this into your calculator. The easiest way is to use the key if the value that you are entering is on the TOP of the fraction line and use the key if the value that you are entering is on the BOTTOM of the fraction line. Leaving the "1"'s out for clarity, here is how you would enter this: 0.01661 X 2000 X 453.59 0.789 8 29.57 32 6 top top top bottom bottom bottom The second option is to use parentheses for the denominator. Again, leaving out the "1"'s for clarity, you could enter the calculation as follows: 0.01661 x 2000 X 453.59 _ = 0.789 X 29.57 X 32 _ = Either one of these methods will give you the correct answer. Please try both of these methods in your calculator now and write your answer here: Now for the wrong way. The most common wrong way to enter this would be: 0.01661 X 2000 * 453.59 # 0.789 x 29.57x 32 which is basically the second option above, but without parentheses. Enter this into your calculator and answer here_ Notice that this last method does not give the same answer as the first two did. You must choose a method that will give you the correct answer and you must practice it! Enter the following into your calculator and report your answer on the line provided: 325 mg Cux- 1x10 g Cu 1mol Cu 2mole- 96485 C 1s 1 mg Cu 63.55 g Cu 1mol Cu 1mole- 5.6C 25 C 3600 s 1mole- 1 mol Al 26.98 g Al Is 1hr 96485 C 3mole- 1 mol Al 6.626x10-34 JB] 1KJ 3.00 x10' m 1 nm 6.022 x1025 ion lion 1x 103 J 1x10 'm 295 nm 1 mole 6.626x10-34 kg 212 6.022x1025 photon 1 mol 1x10' g 1 photon 9 1 mol 2.9979x10' m 5.48579909x10 +g 1 kg 2.9979 x10' m
