E-R Data modeling
The Spring Orchestra Festival is interested in creating a database that maintains information about the orchestras that have participated in the festival as well as their performances over the years.
The orchestras (that are identified by their name together with their city and country of origin) are associated with a number of individuals that the Festival is interested in tracking (the Festival assigns a unique number to each of these persons). The relevant individuals include orchestra directors, musicians, and composers, all known by name. The Festival keeps track of the current value of each director and musician's financial compensation. For musicians, the Festival knows the instrument(s) they play and also the years, universities, and abbreviations of each of their degrees (if they have any). For composers, the country and date of birth are recorded.
There are a limited number of performance slots for the orchestras during each yearly edition of the Festival. Slots can be in the afternoon or in the evening of a given date. Each orchestra usually plays in several slots in a given Festival edition. Only one orchestra performs in a given slot, playing one or more compositions. Sometimes, the performance of an entire slot is recorded live by a studio (only the name of the studio is kept). The Festival keeps track of the name of those compositions that were played, the year in which they were composed, and the composer. All the compositions performed in one slot will be directed by the same director. Over time, several directors and musicians work with more than one orchestra.
Design a conceptual model that captures the information in the description given above. Express your conceptual model using the E-R modeling framework, i.e., produce a representation of your model as an E-R diagram.
Be sure to:
- indicate the various attributes of each entity and relationship set
- specify keys for all entity sets
- specify participation constraints for each relationship sets
