Ethical Case Study (for Task 1) Tony has recently opened a custom artistic vehicle painting business. He has two part-time employees. He understands that his success will depend on his ability to satisfy clients and build his reputation. He's been happy with his new business so far and is excited about his future. "Dr. P" is a new client. He is a wealthy heart surgeon with many important social connections in the community. He is also an avid car collector. Dr. P recently purchased a valuable vintage 1932 Ford coupe hot rod. This type of car is known for the vivid flames that many owners paint on this type of vehicle. Dr. P's 1932 Ford coupe required substantial mechanical and body restoration when he bought it. During the past four months, that restoration work has been completed (this work was performed by an auto restoration specialist in a different garage). The vehicle is now ready to be painted and detailed with hand-painted flames. Tony is thrilled that Dr. P decided to bring his car to Tony for painting. Apparently, one of Tony's previous customers plays golf with Dr. P and had good things to say about Tony's work. This kind of positive word-of- mouth feedback is important for Tony. If Dr. P becomes a satisfied customer, then Dr. P will give good recommendations to other classic car owners and it will mean more customers for Tony. Tony's artistry speaks for itself, but happy customers who give positive recommendations to others is definitely helpful as well. The week after Dr. P and Tony agreed upon the terms of the painting job, Dr. P drove his restored-but-unpainted 1932 Ford coupe to Tony's garage. Dr. P parked the car in one of the empty parking spots and gave Tony the keys. In two weeks, Dr. P would return to pick up his painted car. One of Tony's employees, Al, was working with Tony at the shop when Dr. P dropped off his vehicle. After Dr. P left, Tony asked Al to bring Dr. P's vehicle into garage, so they could start preparing Dr. P's car for painting. While Al was bringing in Dr. P's car, Tony went into the small office in the garage to retrieve his notes that contained Dr. P's requirements. As Tony was sorting through the various papers on his desk, he suddenly heard a loud clunking sound coming from the main garage, followed by Al's loud cursing. Tony ran from the office into the main garage area. To his horror, Dr. P's car was suspended a half-metre in the air on the garage's vehicle lift...but the car had become dislodged on the lift and was dangling at an odd angle. When Tony asked what happened, Al gave the following response: "You told me to bring in Dr. P's car into the garage. I drove it to the vehicle lift and parked it. I got onto my knees to look under the car and place the lift brace arms under the frame of the car. Everything looked good, the brace 3arms were positioned under the frame of the car. Then I pushed the button to start raising the vehicle lift. The car started to rise in the air, but then the right side of the car suddenly shifted and dropped. I swear, Tony, I thought I had placed the brace arms properly under the car but the car slipped as I was lifting. I've never had a problem positioning arm braces in newer cars that we've lifted. I guess I should have placed the brace arms in a different spot under the car frame. I'm really sorry about this, boss." Tony and Al had a closer look at the damage to the vehicle. It didn't look good. The outer body of the car appeared to be undamaged. However, the vehicle's front suspension (the part of a car that attaches the front wheels to the frame) was damaged. The damage was not severe enough to make the car undriveable. However, if the suspension damage wasn't repaired, then there would be future problems with the vehicle. For example, alignment issues would develop and worsen over time, causing abnormal wear on the tires. If the damage wasn't fixed now, then it would lead to more extensive (and more expensive) damage in the future. The exterior of the car wasn't damaged so Tony felt that he could go ahead with the paint job. However, Tony did not have the skills or tools to make the repairs to the suspension of this type of vehicle. Tony wasn't sure about what his next steps should be, regarding the suspension damage under the car.
