ETHICS AWARENESS TESTS ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: SMELL: Does it smell right? When you consider the situation in the light of commonly accepted ethical principles and your own moral compass, is the decision or action something you would feel completely comfortable in carrying out? Alternatively, would it make you since, as if there was a bad smell in the room? APPEARANCE: Does it look right? How would this action or decision appear to other people of sound ethical principles? Would they be likely to condone or condemn it? REPUTATION: Would you tell your loved ones about this? Is this an action or decision that you would be proud to tell your loved ones you had taken, or something you would prefer they didnt know you had done? Would this action or decision enhance your reputation as a person of high integrity, or would it be damaging? FRONT PAGE: Could you live with this as a front page of a newspaper? Would you want your action or decision announced to the world in this way? Would you be proud for everyone to know what you had done, or would you be embarrassed about what people would think? Your paper should be no longer than two pages in length (double spaced, 12 font, 1" margins). This is not a true research paper so only one reference is needed. The reference to your fraud article is the ONLY reference that is needed for this paper. Be sure to provide your reference and a copy of the article with your submission. Finally, following directions will be part of the rubric to determine your grade. Papers longer that 2 pages long (including references) will not be read or graded. Securities fraud generally involves the deception of investors or the manipulation of financial markets. Three common forms of securities fraud are insider trading, accounting fraud, and misrepresentations. Securities fraud is an illegal or unethical activity carried out involving securities or asset markets in order to profit at the expense of others. Martin Shkreli was charged and sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for securities fraud. Shkreli was CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals (Vyera) who got unfavorable publicity for increasing the price of Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per pill, after getting exclusive rights to the decades-old drug in 2015. Daraprim is a life-saving drug that treats a rare parasitic disease that affect pregnant women, cancer patients and AIDS patients. He was convicted on August 5, 2017 of securities fraud and conspiracy in what prosecutors said amounted to a Ponzi scheme. A Ponzi scheme is an investment fraud that pays existing investors with funds collected from new investors. This is similar to a pyramid scheme in that both are using new investors' money to pay the old investors.
