Question 5 (15 marks) Ethical leadership is not an exclusive obligation of the CEO of an organisation, or members of its executive committee or other managers. The management of ethics" includes all managerial type of activities to improve ethics management systems, procedures and policies in an organisation. The establishment of an ethical organisation requires more than just ethics management . All employees, regardless of whether they are in formal leadership and managerial positions need to fulfil this role. Dynamic interaction exists between the leaders and the ethics in an organisation. Leaders shape the culture of an organisation, and are influenced by its existing culture. Leadership's commitment to ethics includes nine (9) dimensions of obligation in terms of an organisation's ethics: Care, Consciousness, Competence, Conversation, Courage, Choice, Creativity, Consistency and Congruence - these are the "nine (9) C's of leaders commitment to ethics" As a newly promoted manager, who has completed your organisation's induction programme, a few years ago, you realise that ethics management is now one of your responsibilities. To assist you with this responsibility, compile notes on the following dimensions of obligation in terms of your organisation's ethics: 5.1 Consciousness. (5 marks) 5.2 Competence. (5 marks) 5.3 Choice (5 marks) Aligns with SAICA competencies: 11 Personal ethics a) Act honestly and demonstrate integrity, accountability and trustworthiness whilst interacting with others. b) Carry out work in a manner that protects public interest, the client, employer and other relevant stakeholders, and put these before one's own interest c) Evaluate the impact of different value systems implicit in, among others, religion, culture, social standing, economic status and personal experiences d) 12 a) b) c) ) d) e) 13 Understand ethics theories (normative and applied) and apply relevant theories when solving personal ethical dilemmas or making personal ethical decisions. Business ethics Analyse the interrelationships between governance, ethics, work values and the law Evaluate the significance of ethics within the business environment, and the ways in which it is managed within an organisation, as part of its ethical organisational culture Display ethical behaviour whilst interacting with the organisation's stakeholders Report ethics related issues to higher levels of management, legal or regulatory authorities or others, when appropriate Understand ethics theories (normative and applied) and apply relevant theories when solving business ethical dilemmas or making business ethical decisions. Professional ethics Relate professional ethics to the notion of public interest by being competent and delivering quality work Distinguish between ethical principles and rules of conduct, and apply the fundamental ethical principles of integrity, objectivity, professional competence and due care, confidentiality and professional behaviour in different scenarios Identify threats to ethical principles and apply appropriate safeguards to facilitate ethical behaviour Apply an ethics-based reasoning process (based on professional values and attitudes and an organisational code of ethics) to solve ethics dilemmas relating to organisational ethics and corporate culture Analyse all courses of potentially unethical action as well as the consequences of each (e.g., disciplinary actions) Report ethical issues to SAICA, legal or regulatory authorities or others when appropriate By way of general conduct, demonstrate a commitment to the ethical values upheld by the profession a) b) c) d) e) f) g)
