Ethyl alcohol at 20C is flowing at the rate of 74.0 m/h. The suction line is a standard 4-in Schedule 40 steel pipe, 10 m long. The total length of 2-in Schedule 40 steel pipe in the discharge line is 1500 m. Assume that the entrance from reservoir 1 is through a square-edged inlet and that the elbows are 45 standard. The valve is a fully open globe valve. (i) If its efficiency is 86 percent, calculate the power supplied to the pump. 10 m Suction line Discharge line DN 50 schedule 40 steel Pump Flow DN 100 schedule 40 steel Fully open Standard elbows (2) globe valve Figure 1: Pipe system (ii) Analyse and propose a new design of the pipe system so that power supplied to the pump can be reduced.
