For this week's discussion post we are asked the following questions and to evaluate the following circumstances, Assess the effectiveness of team members in working in a virtual only environment. Which individual behaviors seem to be beneficial to the overall team process? How can you tell? Which ones are deleterious? How can you tell? Consider the following. Emotions are running wild during a current team meeting that you are attending. There are five people on this team. What would you do during the meeting to try and calm emotions and get back to team problem solving? Why? As far as a remote or virtual environment is concerned the pros and cons can be significant. The beneficial effects and efforts made in a virtual environment can include collaboration, timely responses to questions, chat, and email, and a fast-paced work ethic. These can be displayed online over a network that is set up by the company to facilitate its employee's needs. Knowing that the system is designed in a specific way, an employee who wants to benefit and succeed in their work can learn the ins and outs of the operating systems and then curtail their work to fit in to the systems design, while staying alert of meetings and emails. The cons of the virtual work environment can be many. There are times for a curious mind to elaborate on spending time doing things other than work. With this kind of behavior there will be signs virtually of not adhering to the schedules set forth and being late of answering back to other employees. This behavior can be very deleterious and should be avoided. The way to avoid such behavior is to treat your online work environment as you are being watched and accounted for at all times. I would approach the situation like many other situations where people find themselves emotional and overly excited. I would start off by asking everyone to remain calm and remember that we are in a work environment. To find themselves, and to calmy put themselves back into their comfort zone. Then asking what is going on with everyone and what needs to be addressed, making sure that the reasoning behind this heightened sense of urgency is addressed and solved. By doing that there are many ways to work out all the problems that are taking place and to find a way to get back into team building mode. The most important thing would be to get people to calm down and be heard, then try and solve the problems, then address what created the problem in the first place.
