Except in Oregon and Washington where a law was passed permitting medically assisted suicide, such a practice is illegal in the United States. Jack Kevorkian is an example of someone who was convicted of the practice and sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison. In Europe, medically assisted suicide is permitted by law in Belgium and Holland. In Holland, the Dutch carry "passports" that are a form of living will that indicates to authorities their wishes to be euthanized or not should they be involved in a serious accident or stricken suddenly by a debilitating disease such as heart attack or stroke. Euthanasia in Europe is not without its mistakes and false assumptions with a number of documented cases where death was not the patient's expressed wish, but the attending physician's. What's your opinion about legalizing medically assisted suicide? Why?
