Exercise 4: PARALLEL CITATIONS

Follow the rule in the Bluebook citation form and cite the following questions.

you need to cite the information in the correct Bluebook citation form. All cases are being cited in citation sentences. Although this exercise builds on the rules used in previous exercises, this exercise focuses on B10.1.3 and Rule 10.3.1. You will also need to refer to T1 for information on reporters containing cases in the appropriate jurisdiction and any required public domain information. For each question, you must use the correct typeface given in B2 and the correct spacing given in B6. Assume that word limits are not an issue in your document and that you will follow traditional spacing rules for reporter and court abbreviations.

1-In a brief filed with a United States District Court, you cite the 2019 United States Supreme Court case Dorothy A. Smulley versus Federal Housing Finance Agency, et al. The case is not reported in United States Reports but it is reported in volume 139, page 2023, of Supreme Court Reporter; and in volume 204, page 217, of Lawyers' Edition, Second Series.

2-In a brief filed with the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, you cite the 2000 Maryland Court of Appeals case Jacqueline Manikhi versus Mass Transit Administration, et al. The case is reported in volume 758, page 95 of Atlantic Reporter, Second Series, and in volume 360, page 333, of Maryland Reports. Assume that the usual practice in Maryland is to cite to both the state and regional reporters, with the state reporter listed first.

3-In a brief filed with a United States Court of Appeals, you cite the 2000 Supreme Court of Nebraska case State of Nebraska versus Jesse E. Narcisse. The case is reported in volume 260, page 55, of Nebraska Reports and in volume 615, page 110, of North Western Reporter, Second Series.

4-In a brief filed with a Texas state district court, you cite the 2019 Second Circuit Court of Appeals case Danielle Lenzi versus Systemax, Inc. The case is reported in volume 944, page 97, of Federal Reporter, Third Series, and in volume 104, page 46,418, of Employment Practice Decisions.

5-In a brief filed with the Supreme Court of Illinois, you cite the 1999 Michigan Court of Appeals case Diane and James Zurcher versus Barbara Herveat. The case is reported in volume 238, page 267, of Michigan Appeals Reports and in volume 605, page 329, of North Western Reporter, Second Series. Assume Illinois has no local rule concerning the citation of out-of-state cases.

6-In a brief filed with the Oregon Supreme Court, you cite the 1995 Oregon Court of Appeals case GPL Treatment, Limited, a corporation, versus Pacific Corporation, a Delaware corporation. The case is reported in volume 894, page 470, of Pacific Reporter, Second Series; in volume 133, page 633, of Oregon Reports, Court of Appeals; and in volume 26, page 316, of UCC Reporter Service, Second Series. Assume that the usual practice in Oregon is to cite both the state and regional reporters, listing the state reporter first.

7-In a brief filed with a Massachusetts state trial court, you cite the 1999 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court case Dennis Connors versus City of Boston. The case is reported in volume 430, page 31, of Massachusetts Reports; in volume 714, page 335, of North Eastern Reporter, Second Series; and in volume 74, page 761, of American Law Reports, Fifth Series. Assume that the usual practice in Massachusetts is to cite both state and regional reporters, in that order.

8-In an ordinary legal memorandum, you cite the 1996 Supreme Court of Vermont case Barbara and Michael Murray versus St. Michael's College and Donald Sutton. The case is reported in volume 164, page 205, of Vermont Reports; in volume 667, page 294, of Atlantic Reporter, Second Series; in volume 104, page 1246, of Education Law Reports; and in volume 15, page 372, of IER Cases. No public domain citation is available for this case.

9-In a brief filed with the South Dakota Supreme Court, you cite the 2009 South Dakota Supreme Court case Cornell Joel McBride, Petitioner and Appellant, versus Douglas Weber, Warden, South Dakota State Penitentiary, Respondent and Appellee. The case is published in volume 763, page 527, of North Western Reporter, Second Series. This case was given the sequential number of 14 by the South Dakota Supreme Court.

10-In a brief filed with the Oklahoma Supreme Court, you cite the 1963 Oklahoma Supreme Court case H.S. Shadid, et al., versus The American Druggist Fire Insurance Company. The case is published in volume 386, page 311, of Pacific Reporter, Second Series. This case was given the sequential number of 146 by the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
