EXERCISE 4.2 Here is a potentially fun assignment-a scavenger hunt-that can help you begin to explore the selectivity of authors' literature reviews. The first step is to choose a recently published journal article that interests you. Note the article's general subject (via the title and abstract) as well as its publication date. Then, perform a database search to locate an article on a similar topic that was published several years earlier. (If you don't know how to do a database search, your university librarian or your instructor should be happy to help you.) Read that article too. Can you make an argument that the author of the recent article could have benefitted from reading and citing the earlier article? Was there a concept, method, finding, or some other useful element from the earlier article that could have been explicitly incorporated into the recent arti- cle? Can you make a case that the earlier article should have been included in the recent article, or that it was at least as deserving of inclu- sion as some other references that the authors chose to include? You might also report some quantitative results from your database search: how many dozens or hundreds of articles did you find that dealt with issues similar to the recent article (judging by the key terms appear- ing in titles and/or abstracts)?
