EXERCISE A SIMPLE CASE OF PAY CALCULATION Jonathan Mendell, an airline mechanic (at $25.00 her hour) for the Appalachian Cargo Airline, was asked to work on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. He accepted the assignment and began work at 7:00 am on September 2, expecting to be finished at 3:30 pm, after completing eight hours work with a half-hour paid lunch period. However, several emergencies arose and he was asked to work beyond the eight hour shift. Jonathan remained on the job until 10:30 pm. He went home a tired man, but happy in thinking about the amount of money he made for his long day's work. He and his wife studied the new labor contract, noting these provisions quoted below. Mr. and Mrs. Mendell then calculated his gross pay for the day. How much money did Jonathan earn from the Appalachian Cargo for his day's work? ******************************************************************** The following are the relevant contractual provisions: Article VI - Holidays 1. Employees will be entitled to the following paid holidays during each contract year: New Year's Day Columbus Day Washington's Birthday Veterans Day Memorial Day Thanksgiving Day July 4 Christmas Day Labor Day One Floating Holiday Payment for each holiday will be equal to eight hours times the employee's current applicable hourly rate of pay. 2. If an employee is scheduled to work on any of the aforementioned holidays, the employee shall receive twice the employee's current applicable hourly of pay in addition to the basic holiday payment provided under (1.) above. Article LX-Overtime 1. For hours worked in excess of eight hours on any day, payment shall be made on the basis of one and one half times the employee's applicable hourly rate.
