EXPERIMENT 6: SAPONIFICATION REACTION OF ETHYL ACETATE An engineer examines the conversion rate of ethyl acetate in the reaction with sodium hydroxide by using by back titration method. The solution used in titration is 0.05 M caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). The initial ethyl acetate and caustic soda concentrations are 0.1 M. Sample flasks contain phenolphtalein indicator and 20 mL 0.1 M hydrochloric acid. From the beginning of the reaction, 20 ml samples were taken from the reaction vessel at intervals of two minutes and added to the sample flasks. The prepared samples were titrated with sodium hydroxide. The consumption values for NaOH read from the burette as a result of the titration are given in the table below. a) For this reaction, choose a limited component and determine how conversion changes with time. b) Find the residence time in reactor for 70% conversion. NaOH amount Sample Number t (min) consumed in titration Vtit. (mL) 8.0 1 2 2 4 12.4 3 6 15.0 4 8 16.2 5 10 17.0 6 12 17.2
