Contrast Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories with respect to common themes and important differences. Describe how more recent theorists have built and elaborated on some of Vygotsky's ideas, with particular attention to mediated learning experiences, social constructivism, scaffolding, guided participation in adult activities, communities of practice, apprenticeships, and dynamic assessment. Identify at least three different ways in which one might effectively integrate ideas from sociocultural theory and information processing theory. Describe key ideas in three contemporary contextualist perspectives: (a) embodiment, (b) situated and distributed learning and cognition, and (c) ecological systems theory. Apply sociocultural theory and other contextualist theories to identify potentially effective strategies for helping children and adults acquire important knowledge and skills.
