- These are my notes: within the Lesson:
United States Households have at least one pet. The costs of raising a pet are more expensive than in years past. While it is more expensive, the Animal Science industry has seen significant growth in the companion animal industry through trend-setting. Many people today have cameras at home so they can see what the pet is doing during the day, talk to the pet, or maybe even give the pet a treat if they come up to the camera. Families order dog food, toys, and basic supplies and have it delivered to the front door.
- Pet owners and consumers have become increasingly interested in animal production and care. Owners and consumers increase their awareness, and its more important that producers are intentional and even transparent as they raise their animals.
- Some producers and owners are highly invested in the welfare of their animals, but there are also some laws and regulations that offer some protection to animals in the event their welfare comes into question. These laws and regulations help give animals a voice.
- Laws that protect animals: The Animal Welfare Act sets standards for minimum care and treatment of animals used for commercial sale, used for research, transported commercially, or exhibited to the public. It was originally passed in 1966 but revised numerous times. The most recent revision was in 2008.
- The Health Research Extension Act was passed in 1985. It sets standards for the care of animals used for biomedical and behavioral research.
- Most states provide some regulation of breeders, kennels, pet deals, and pet shots. This includes pet purchaseprotection laws, also referred to as "lemon laws," which provide legal recourse to people who purchase animals that are later found to have a disease or defect.
- Animal management include: Ear cropping. That is often done to meet a breed standard, such as with Dobermans. There are no health benefits to having your dog's ears cropped. This is another practice performed for the comfort of the dog owner. Removing tissue from the vocal cords reduces the pitch or volume of a dog's bark, but provides no benefit to the dog. Tail docking is performed on dogs to meet breed standards. There are no benefits to the dog.
