Freudian/Psychoanalytic Regressive Behaviours. Regression is a more primitive way of coping with anxieties which temporarily reduces the stress, but does not deal with the source of the anxiety. Consider their habits and tendencies for possible regressive coping behaviours Possibilities include smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling, overeating, temper tantrums, biting fingernails, destroying things, childish talk, sexual behaviours, escaping into reading or TV/movies, superstitions, risky actions, and more. Reflect on any potentially regressive coping habits of theirs and how they have functioned in their life. 2. Jungian The Persona What are their favourite items of clothing, jewelry or objects/possessions that they carry or keep around them? Choose something (that they normally have with them) which represents them strongly, something that is an integral part of their self-image. Go without it for a week, and reflect on their reactions (thoughts and feelings). Lend it to a friend for a week and reflect on their reactions to that experience. 3. Adlerian Experience with Superiority and Inferiority Reflect on and describe early experiences when they felt a notable sense of powerlessness or inferiority. How did they cope with that? Reflect on an occasion or pattern where they pursued a sense of superiority rather than constructive self- improvement or competence. What were the results and how did they feel about it? 4. Horreyan Neurotic Claims Recall a time when they asked (or demanded) something that was unrealistic and you became upset. Recall a time when they agreed to do something that they really did not want to do. Recall a time when they were highly critical of someone because they did not meet their standards of right & wrong. Reflect on all these patterns and their potential for unrealistic expectations or standards. Reflect on whether they see themself moving away, toward or against as defensive strategies, and the results. 5. Skinnerian/Behavioural Reinforcement vs. Punishment 1. Write down a behaviour that you want to decrease in frequency. Punish yourself (or have a partner punish you) each time you engage in the behavior, for a week. The punishment could be an insult, giving up a normal treat or pleasure, or a fine - with the money going to charity (or the partner). 2. Write down a behavior that you want to increase in frequency. Give yourself a reinforcer (or have a partner do it) each time you engage in the behavior, for a week. 3. Reflect on the two experiences and your behavior patterns or changes. How did you feel about each method? Did you experience any of the possible negative side-effects of using punishment?
