Factorial design is in the majority of psychology experiments. The main component of an experiment is how the independent variable affects the dependent variable (Cherry, 2021). However, there could be an experiment where there is more than one independent variable. Due to this, the experiment can now have a manipulation of one or more variable, which is the factorial design (Cherry, 2021). A common type of experiment in psychology is the 2x2 factorial design. This means that there are two independent variables (factors) and each variable has two levels (Cherry, 2021). The numbers indicate how many independent variables there are and how many levels for each variable (Cherry, 2021). For example, a 2x2 factorial design means that there are two independent variables that each have two levels. An example of a social issue in my community that could use a 2x2 factorial design is determining whether girls and boys taking a summer class would increase their grades. This is a strong social issue not just in my community but the country due to effects that COVID has had on our children's education level in school. The two factors is the one group of girls and the second group of boys. The two levels are the group of girls/boys that take the summer class and the group of girls/boys that do not take the summer class. Each factor has two levels. This study does contain participant variables and those are the ones that are participating in the experiment. In my study, the participating variables are the groups of school aged girls and boys. External validity in psychology is how much the experiment can create rules that can be applied to life (Cherry, 2021). In this case, factorial design does have an impact on external validity because if the conclusion of results from this study show that the group of children that participated in the summer class and had an increase of scores, will demonstrate that children should participate in summer classes
could we add other variables and expand this design to another format?
