Fall 2023 Home Syllabus Announcements Modules Grades 3 People 58 Student Help Library Resources Tutoring 62F Mostly cloudy Week 5 Overview A+ Just like young children have predictable patterns to their development so do adults. As you engage with adults you work with, they are learning, and they are each at a different stage of their development. You too are learning and have to self-reflect about where you are in your learning process. You may be wondering what I am referring to when I say adults are also developing like children do. Well, what I am referring to is that as an adult you are learning life still, about your emotions as an adult, you are learning your career still, you are learning about the world still and so many other things we are still learning and discovering as an adult. With this learning comes stages of development just like a child goes through stages of development. Adult learning stages are more complicated, but we are still learning to share. When working with adults not only do you need to know where you are at in your stage of development, but you also must figure out what stage of learning they are in, but you also want to discover what kind of learner they are, visual, auditory, read and write it, or hands on. Once you have these two keys you will be able to address the adults you are working with in a developmentally appropriate way that will have staff that are more willing to support your vision as a leader. Being a leader of adults is not an easy endeavor and needs to be practiced. The more experiences you have guiding and leading adults the better you will get at it just as a child get more competent in skills when practiced. Just as you have studied the various theories and philosophies of ECE you will now need to expand that knowledge to adults. Malcolm Knowles introduces the Adult Learning Theory and the concept of andragogy, practice of teaching adults. Adult learning also looks at seven principles, self-directed, transformational, experimental, mentorship, orientation to or of learning, motivation and readiness to learn. There are also more specific learning stages when it comes to being a teacher, survival, consolidation, renewal, maturity. During each of these stages teachers need to be provided certain support and perhaps trainings to bridge to the next stage in their development just as a child might need that ZPD developed curriculum to bridge the gap between what they know ant what they have the capability to know. There is also the theory that Dr. Robert Kegan developed on adult development that look at these stages: Stage 1 - Impulsive mind (early childhood) Stage 2 - Imperial mind (adolescence, 6% of adult population) Stage 3 - Socialized mind (58% of the adult population) Stage 4 - Self-Authoring mind (35% of the adult population) Stage 5 - Self-Transforming mind (1% of the adult population) Where would you place yourself? Having the ability to self-reflect and see yourself for what you really are, what you really want to accomplish and where you are at in the journey will bridge you into that self-authoring and self-transforming mind. Eric Erickson as you may have heard of so many times in your ECE classes has stages that he looks at all the way through late adulthood with stages 6-8. Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation (early adulthood) K- Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle adulthood) Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair (late adulthood) There are many more theories and principles that can be brought into this topic and below are some additional resources that you can use to further your understanding of the adult learner and the stages that they may face in life and career. Knowing and understanding that adult's development is a critical part of working with adults and it is critical you have an understanding of an adult learner and how they develop to be a successful leader of adults. 62F Mostly cloudy The following are resources that provide more detail about adult learning and stages of teaching.
