My husband retired with 28 years of active duty, and I worked as a government contractor for the Indiana National Guard. I had two different positions, one was as a family assistance Specialist, that job Consisted of the following: Provide information and referral to service members and their families by assisting with their individual needs. Complete outreach phone calls to deployed families on a monthly basis. Conduct Informational Briefings (deployment, reunion, etc.) and market Family Programs to service members and their families, Military Commands and the Community. Provide resources and referral to families in need. The other one was as a Survivor outreach Specialist (SOS) This job was personally more rewarding to me, however it carried a lot more emotional baggage. SOS Coordinators are tasked with providing care and concern to family members of the fallen. Grief is hard for everyone but add that in with the extra trauma of losing a military service member while they are serving our country adds an extra layer of difficulty.
