" Henry David Thoreau Titan Autoworks had been a mainstay industry in Cambridge for over 50 years. Its pride and joy was the Titan, a comfortable, four-door limousine with expansive in- terior room, great trunk space, and sturdy frame work. The Titan could ride six or seven in semiluxury while carrying all their luggage. It could take the bumps and potholes of the highways and byways of America with low maintenance needs. For these reasons, taxicab companies not only in the United States but around the world featured fleets of Titans, affectionately known as the black and white cabbies. There was only one problem with the Titan, which had an appearance similar to a classic BMW. The Titan got about 7 miles per gallon of fuel. This was a small prob- lem until 1973, when the gas crunch hit, and fuel prices went from 25" a gallon to over a dollar. Orders for new Titans decreased dramatically, and car production at the Cambridge plant fizzled. The leaders at Titan toyed with entering a joint agree- ment with Toyota to make a fuel-efficient smaller cab, but the leaders had known success for too many years with their larger product.
