Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is an industrially important reaction whereby CO(9) is converted into hydrocarbons by reaction with H2(g) over Co-based catalysts. (a) With the aid of chemical equations, describe the elementary reaction steps that occur on the surface of the Co catalyst during the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. (6 marks) (b) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was performed of the surface of a Co catalyst used for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis during CO(g) adsorption. A portion of the Co XPS spectrum is depicted in Figure Q1. (i) Explain the basic operational principles of XPS. (5 marks) (ii) Suggest with justification which portion of the Co XPS spectrum is shown in Figure Q1 and utilise it to determine the type of CO(g) adsorption occurring. Comment on how this compares to your answer to Q1a and suggest if this would be a good catalyst for this process or not
