At 1000h this morning a tornado swept through the Town of Trillium. The funnel cloud moved in from the southwest touching down in farmers' fields to the west of town and then cut a swathe of damage from Highway 206 and Church St. to the cormmer of Queen and Goose Streets. According to Environment Canada, the tornado is believed to be at least an F2 on the Fujita scale. With winds of around 200 kilometres per hour, the funnel cloud wreaked havoc on the town for about four minutes. Luckily, most residents were able to get to their basements due to a weather radio campaign in Trillium last Emergency Prevention Week. Initial reports indicate that a number of residences and the Bingo Hall incurred significant structural damage and blown out windows. In addition, several large trees were uprooted including one that now lies across Pine Street. Power is out for the entire town to the west of Goose Street. The smell of natural gas permeates the air at the corner of Pine and Drake Streets. In addition, the roof was torn off of the Home for the Aged (marked "A" on the map of Trillium) where 75 residents live, 10 of who are immobile. It is feared that some of the residents may be trapped under the debris. At least 5 have chest or head wounds from flying debris. With broken water pipes and rain still coming down, the basement of the Home for the Aged is flooding and the facility needs to be evacuated.
