Assignment Content
Group Assignment (Maximum 5 students) You must be enrolled on the Blackboard
page to submit this assignment
As a potential investor, you are going to analyze the financial viability of two Canadian
companies, Bell Media and Rogers Communication. Then you will make an investment decision and
justify your reasoning. Email your instructor on or before February 24 for approval on the
two companies you wish to analyze to ensure they are compatible.
The Process
First, choose two public companies that are listed in the TSX. Please avoid banks,
financial institutions, Insurance companies, and Resource companies. Ideally, the
companies should be in the same industry and of similar sizes in terms of either
Sales volume or Assets.
Second, obtain the most recent annual financial statements for each company. You can
get this from companies websites (usually under Investor Relations or from
www.sedar.com). Print off each company's balance sheet and income statement and
include these with your assignment.
NOTE: At a minimum, you must include a Bibliography that lists your sources. Humber
requires you to note these sources in APA style. Refer to the APA Tip Sheet for help with
the proper formatting.
Third, calculate a minimum of 3 ratios (in each of the five Ratio Categories listed
below), for each company and briefly describe the comparative results for each
section (a brief paragraph for each section):
(i) Short-term Solvency / Liquidity
(ii) Long-term Solvency / Leverage
(iii) Asset Utilization
(iv) Profitability
(v) Market Value
(vi) Growth and Profitability
Year to Year revenue growth
Year to Year net profit growth
Finally, briefly give your overall impression of each company based on your
analysis and choose which one you think would make a better investment
option. Explain your answer.
Delivery
Prepare a report based on the above requirements. The report must include:
A Cover page containing the course number, group number, and group
members full names with ID.
Table of contents
An introduction (minimum page)
Your findings, including all the detailed calculations.
Side by side comparisons and analysis of ratios for the chosen companies
Comparison and analysis with the industry ratios
A well-written Conclusion (Minimum 1 page)
Any other related information you deem important.
Copy of Financial Statements that you have used in the calculations. [as
attachments or at the end of the report]
Please submit your report as an attachment in the Blackboard on or before the due date.
Expectations
All group members must participate in completing this assignment. If any member
did not participate or did minimal participation, other members may inform the
faculty and the faculty will decide on the grade of that member(s). You may also
mention the participation % on the cover sheet.
Please keep in mind that all members receive the same grade in a group project
unless otherwise disclosed. It is the responsibility of the group members both as
individuals and as a group regarding the clarity, proper calculation as well as analysis,
and quality of information you have provided in the project. It is up to you to divide
the project work, but everyone will get the same grade irrespective of how well you
contribute to a certain part of the project work.
