Final experiment FIN-665-001.2023F
There is so much data available on the internet that it is ridiculous. Go find some and test a hypothesis. Your report will have 4 slides and only 4 slides. The number of slides is equal to 4. No header slide is necessary because that would be five slides, and your presentation has only 4 slides. The four slides should be (you can change/reshuffle what goes into each slide, but you cannot exceed the 4-page limit).
- Slide 1:
- Research Question: Define a feasible research question (e.g., "Are more goals scored in the second half of World Cup games?").
- Mechanism: Explain a plausible causal mechanism behind your hypothesis (e.g., "Goalies and defenders get tired").
- Statement: Include the sentence, We test the hypothesis that
- Slide 2:
- Data Source: Describe where you collected the data (e.g., "Downloaded all World Cup scores from worldcupscores.com").
- Data Description: Provide summary statistics, histograms, or box-and-whisker plots to help us understand your data.
- Slide 3:
- Regression Model: Describe the regression model you have chosen for testing your hypothesis.
- Justification: Explain why you chose this particular model (e.g., Linear, Logit, MC simulations, etc.)
- Slide 4:
- Results: Present the findings of your experiment (e.g., "There is no difference in 1st vs. 2nd half goal scores").
- Conclusion: Sum up what these results mean (e.g., "Attackers must be just as tired").
- Limitations: Discuss reasons to be skeptical of your result and how future research could address these limitations.
- Important Notes Rules
- You work alone or in a group of a maximum of two people. The bar is higher for those who work in groups of two. Your slides must be clean and look professional, as if you were trying to convince a senior executive about the validity of your hypothesis.
- Start early and break down the work. Even though the assignment is due on November 6th, you need to start working on it soon (like right now). I am happy to advise you and guide you through each step, but you need to come up with a specific hypothesis first. \
- Alternative options: I am also open to alternative options/variations to the structure I propose above, provided that you discuss them with me first (and early on).
Grading Guidelines
Heres how your bounty will be counted:
- Clarity and structure: Is your presentation easy to follow? Does each slide focus on its intended topic?
- Research question and hypothesis: Is your research question clearly defined? Is your hypothesis well-formulated and testable?
- Data collection and description: Have you used reliable sources? Is the data presented in a way that is easy to understand?
- Methodology: Is your choice of regression model appropriate? Have you justified this choice well?
- Results and interpretation: Are the results clearly presented? Do you offer a reasonable interpretation and acknowledge limitations?
- Presentation: Can you support your findings in a 5-minute presentation?
Bonus (up to 20% boost): Exceptional creativity, thoroughness, or insight will earn you some extra! So get creative.
