Final Project

Part 1

Controlled vocabularies and coding systems are instrumental in health information management. Throughout the course you have observed the use of such coding systems as ICD-10, and in Chapter 15 you are introduced to SNOMED-CT. Summarize the use of controlled vocabularies such as SNOMED-CT in healthcare, and compare and contrast such vocabularies with coding systems like ICD-10 on a single page.

Part 2

If you have not already, at some point in your career you will participate in an accreditation process. Accreditation is a self-reflection exercise that verifies and certifies the value and currency of your service(s). Part 2 of your final project requires you to evaluate The Joint Commission standards regarding healthcare information management and write a relevant policy and procedure document pertaining to the implementation of a healthcare delivery system for application of an information system. Specifically, review the material linked as Standards. This document although listed as ambulatory, contains The Joint Commission standards regarding information management that apply to healthcare settings seeking accreditation from the commission. Choose one (1) of the criteria to develop a policy and procedure document for any particular healthcare setting. So, choose one (not all) of the following:

and write a policy and procedure that would be reviewed by Joint Commission reviewers to assess compliance with these standards. Part 3

If you have not already, at some point in your career you will likely need to be responsive to state and state health department regulatory and licensure requirements:

These requirements can be quite lengthy documents (e.g. Chapter 51 of the Wisconsin State Statutes pertaining to State Alcohol, Drug Abuse, Developmental Disabilities And Mental Health Act) and are subject to change frequently (e.g. 2013 Act 236 which eliminates DHS 124 from state statutes and requires DHS to instead use and enforce Medicare's CoPs as the minimum regulatory standards). Part 3 of your final project requires you to evaluate the material linked as Chapter 153 of the Wisconsin State Statutes:

This document is the Wisconsin Statue 153 that pertains to definitions and legislated requirements for handling health care information. Your assignment is to evaluate this document and extract requirements as stipulated by the state of Wisconsin. Write a concise summary detailing state legislated requirements for hospitals. Do not get bogged down in definitions; rather focus on aspects such as can contractors be used for data management and warehousing? What regulations are they subjected to? etc. Not trying to rewrite HIPAA here, simply looking at what additional requirements and/or allowances are described in state regulations.

Part 4

As a final assignment, provide a written paper (no more than 2 pages, 1.5 line spacing, 12 point font) addressing the current organization and delivery of healthcare systems in the United States. The United States is relatively unique in this respect with substantial roles for both private and public (government) entities. Provide insights regarding strengths and weaknesses of this topic (including aspects such as coverage, costs, role of patients, etc.) and include comparisons with international healthcare systems to support or refute the perspectives presented in your paper.
