First please read all the information regarding what to do and how to apply the data entry into SPSS.
Open a new session of SPSS (search the computer for SPSS, you want the program with the highest number, I think were on version 25). Once you open the program, you will be given the chance to select one of a few options, you should double click "new dataset".
At the bottom of the screen, there are two tabs, one says "data view" the other says "variable view". Click on the "variable view" tab. This view lets you tell the computer information about the variables you are creating. Each row is a variable, and you can give the program information in each column. We have gathered data on gender, number of items carried, and color of shoes for 129 people so we need to create three variables.
Enter Data
At the bottom of the screen, click "Data View" which will bring you to a screen that looks a little like an Excel spreadsheet. If you've entered the variables correctly, the first three columns should be labeled with your three variable names. Copy the data from the excel file into the spreadsheet. (highlight all the data in Excel NOT the column headers! and hit ctrl + C, then click on the top left box in SPSS and hit ctrl + V). Note that there are 129 rows of data, so you need to scroll down to get it all.
Obtain Descriptive Statistics
Once the variables are defined and all data is entered, click Analyze on the tool bar, then Descriptive Statistics and then Frequencies. (The option Descriptives would give you all the same numbers, but would not allow you to make a histogram, so for pictures you have to choose frequencies even though its going to give you some information you dont need.)
Highlight the variable label Gender in the left-hand box and move it using the arrow key to the Variable Box to the right. Do the same for "Items"
Click Statistics. Then select the following: Mean, Median, Mode, Std. deviation, Variance, and Skewness. Click Continue.
Click Charts. Then select Histogram. Select Show normal curve on histogram. Click Continue.
Click OK.
The program will produce output with the descriptive statistics you checked as well as a frequency distribution table with frequencies, percents, and cumulative percentages, and the histograms. Note the differences between what we did in class and what the computer did.
Read Output / Save the File
Make sure you can find all the relevant information on the output.
To export the output to a Word document, click "file" then "export". In the middle right is a button marked browse, click on that and find a place to which you can save this file. Make sure it's set to export to a word document (drop down menu) and check to make sure it's saving to your thumb drive or your P drive (if you save it to a school computer, it will vanish). Name it ItemsXXX where XXX are your initials.
Open the document you just created (open Word and navigate to the place you saved the document and open it). At the bottom of the Word document write in short, full sentences, an APA format description of the data. In addition to general observations about the data, you should include whether the distributions had any skew, and in what direction, and what that means in the context of the two variables you have. This does not need to be poetry. Short and to the point.
In Data View, take a screen shot. On the keyboard is a button marked PrntScr. Tap that and it takes a screen shot. Beneath the written description of the data, paste the screen shot by pressing ctrl+V.
In Variable View, take a screen shot and paste it into the same Word file.
Below contains the data that is required.
