Efficacy of a school-based mental health intervention based on mindfulness and character strengths use among adolescents: A pilot study of Think Happy-Be Happy intervention. Journal of Happiness Studies, 24, 677-697.

1. The authors discuss forms of School-Based Positive Psychology Interventions (SPPIs) and then focus on mindfulness-based and strengths-based SPPIs. What is the purpose of a "strengths-based SPPI"?

2. The authors discuss the theoretical argument that relationship between strengths use and well-being is mediated by self-esteem. Explain this proposed mediating relationship.

3. What are the main hypotheses of Kennes et al. study?

4. The research design. The authors state that this is a "quasi-experimental study." Explain why it's considered quasi-experimental rather than experimental.

5. The analysis. The authors did both a "completer analysis" and an "intention to treat" analysis. Explain what those are and why both would be done.

6. The results. Were they hypotheses supported (i.e., was the intervention effective)? Explain (not just yes/no, as it's more complicated than that...).

7. Based on the results of this study and the authors' discussion of these results, explain what school staff might need to do in order to maintain intervention effects over time.

8. The researchers reported that, overall, the students lacked motivation for the intervention and didn't engage in much practice of the skills outside of the intervention sessions. Through other research, we know that practicing skill builds competence with those skills and improves effectiveness. Use your recently gained knowledge on motivation and discuss ONE strategy that might researchers might add to this intervention (and then study it) as a way to increase students' motivation for the intervention and practice. Don't just make something up here - use the module(s) and your text (e.g., self-determination theory) and explicitly talk about the theory and/or research which supports your suggestion (e.g., as Zelenski noted on p. X.......).
