Colorado is one of at least 20 states with laws mandating consent, but this one goes a step further by forcing medical students to meet and identify the patient before the surgery, as signed by Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera. While supporters claim that the rule is required to stop nonconsensual intimate examinations, several healthcare professionals contend that getting prior consent was previously common. Professor of obstetrics and gynecology Dr. Emily Schneider emphasizes that doing pelvic exams without consent is already illegal and regarded as assault. Nonetheless, the legislation imposes additional legal obligations and possible responsibilities on physicians and medical facilities. During the years of 1966 to 1970 a group of Danish doctors placed coils in young indigenous girls to control the population. The age of the girls with the youngest being 12 years old. The last documented cases were in 1990. These coils were placed during a \"medical exam at school.\" (Bryant) It is estimated that 4,500 girls had this coil placed. These coils would later cause some of these girls to become infertile. The only consent was implied consent. Implied consent \"determined by some act of silence, which raises a presumption that consent has been authorized." (Pozgar) These girls never protested during the procedure is why the doctor could have assumed that they were consenting. The legal age of consent is 15 years old in Denmark. However, the parents of these young girls never consented to these coils being placed inside of their children. The parents were never notified regarding the coils being placed. Also, they were only placed in the indigenous girls only.
