FL Calculate the net torque acting on the board for the point shown in the diagram (halfway between mg and FR)- mg What you found in G. and H. is that the net torque is zero. We really didn't need to do the calculation to know that the must be zero. net torque has to be zero because we know the board is not turning. Therefore, the net torque about any point of rotation This is very useful for solving problems with extended objects in static equilibrium because we can pick the point of rotation where there are unknown forces acting. What we essentially did in this problem is pick the left support as a point of rotation. This made it such that FL was not included in the equation and we solved for FR. We then picked the right support as a point of rotation and that helped us find FL. 1. A l kg rock is suspended by a massless string from one end of a 1 m measuring stick. In the position shown, the stick is in equilibrium. a. Draw the forces acting on the meter stick. Hint: Don't forget about the upward force exerted by the support. b. Pick a point of rotation to write Thet = 0 and solve for the mass of the meter stick
