Flag question: Spacer

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) can masquerade as adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD), leading to diagnosis confusion. ADSD is a neurogenic, action induced, focal laryngeal dystonia wherein the speaker experiences involuntary hyper-adduction of the true vocal folds, producing debilitating voice breaks and an effortful strained-strangled voice quality. An investigation assessed the diagnostic worth of acoustic analysis of phonatory breaks as a possible objective test to distinguish ADSD from MTD.

The researchers recruited 148 participants. Among the 65 participants with ADSD, 60% tested positive. Among the 72 patients who tested negative, 64% had MTD.

Table 1 presents the results of the test

Diagnostic Test/Gold Standard
Has ADSD Has MTD Total
T+ (i.e., phonatory break at 40 ms) 39 37 76
T- (i.e., phonatory break at <40 ms) 26 46 72
Total 65 83 148
