Flux is the amount of something that crosses through some region of space, typically an area. The "something" can literally be anything that can be associated with direction and magnitude or "flow". Therefore, before describing flux in more detail, it will be useful to develop a way of depicting "flow". In physics and mathematics, the diagrams I'll describe below are called field line diagrams. A nice example is to consider a stream and all the particles of water that make up the stream. Imagine each particle tracing out its trajectory as it flows. For a steadily flowing stream, you might end up with a picture like this: These are not vectors notice that the arrowhead indicating the direction of flow is not at the end, but rather in the middle region of these lines. Question 2.1) Pick a position on the flow or field line diagram for the stream shown above. Draw an arrow indicating the direction of the velocity vector for the particle at that point in the stream. The density of the field lines determines how strong the flow or how much of some quantity is being transferred.
