Follow the steps below and take screenshots:

Step 1: Using your Internet Browser, type in the address WIGLE.net (one "G") and hit enter.

Step 2: If you do not already have a Sign-on for Wigle.net, you will need to set up a

temporary Free account. (Sorry about this extra step, signing up for an account

wasn't necessary until just recently.)

Step 3: Enter data to set up a new log-in. (You may want to use your "junk" email address, or

Your CSCC email account, as Office 365 allows you to mark any junk emails you may

get as clutter.)

Step 4: Using the Search bar in the center of the WIGLE page, type in your address, (or

the known address of a local business or neighbor, if you have privacy concerns).

You could also use Columbus State's Campus address, as we have done in the

example on the following page.

Step 5: Zoom in to the center of the display map, until you are able to actually read the SSID

and location data for the Wireless access points active in your location specified.

Question 1: What are theGPS coordinates(Latitude and Longitude) of your typed address?

Latitude ________

Longitude________

The "latitude" of a point on the Earth's surface is the angle between the equatorial plane and an imaginary straight line that passes through that point and through the center of the Earth. Lines joining points of the same latitude trace circles along the surface of Earth called parallels, because they are parallel to the Equator and to each other. For example, the38th parallel Northformed the border between North and South Korea just prior to the Korean War.

TheNorth Poleis 90N; theSouth Poleis 90S. The 0 parallel of latitude is designated the Equator, the fundamental plane of almost all geographic coordinate systems.

According to the website www.findlatitudeandlongitude.com the addressLatitudeN 400' and LongitudeW 830'is somewhere near the corner of North High Street, and West 15thAvenue, in Columbus Ohio. (Actually, a Sorority house between North High Street and Summit St. on 15thAve).

It is very important to know your Latitude coordinates North or South of the Equator when installingSolar Power Generating Systems,, as the Maximum Average Solar Radiation Power can be achieved by angling your fixed panel or roof installations so they are at the same angle from the Earth's surface, as your location's latitude coordinates, thereby exposing the panel's surface to the most direct Sun light during the day. For example, if you have a solar-powered Dacha or mini-house in Delaware county at a Latitude 40 degrees North of the Equator, you would want to angle your Solar Panels at an angle of 40 degrees from the surface of the Earth, preferably facing South, to get the most absorption of Solar radiation on average throughout the year for a fixed-panel system. (see diagram on the next page).

The "longitude" of a point on Earth's surface is the angle east or west of a reference meridian to another meridian that passes through that point. All meridians are halves of great ellipses, often called Great Circles, which converge at the North and South Poles. The meridian of the British Royal Observatory inGreenwich, South-East London, England, is the internationalPrime Meridian.

In early Maritime or land navigation, a ship's position to the East or West could be determined by setting the ship's Master Clock to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) then calculating the "minutes out" by comparing the clock to the time of the Sun's equinox at noon, if the weather would permit. Since the Earth rotates every 24 hours, each degree of rotation would be 24 hrs. x 60 mins / 360 degrees, or 4 minutes for every degree of travel away from thePrime Meridian.

Step 3:From the WIGLE map, locate 8 SSID's (Broadcast Id's) in your vicinity, and list them below:

Question 2: How many of these SSID's look like they may have been modified from the default setting, by changing the Broadcast name? (e.g. SBUX, McDonald's, Brandon's Wifi, etc.)____.

Question 3: How many appear to be using the default factory settings for their SSID's? (e.g. ATT 1137a, HP Officejet Pro 6960, Verizon Wireless 31148, Linksys E4200 Wifi, etc.)_____.

Remember from your studies we learned the first step in securing your Wifi installation is to change the name of, or turn off your Broadcast SSID, and to change your setup password from the factory default settings. It becomes immediately apparent from our findings that not everyone who has installed a wireless access point is taking their network security seriously, or possibly they don't know how to change their equipment over from the factory default settings.

Step 4: Using a search engine, look up directions on "How to change your router's name and

password" for the Linksys E4200 Wireless Router in the above example.

Question 4: How many steps are there in this process?____.

Step 5: Next, look up directions on "How to remotely change your router settings" for the

Linksys E4200 Wireless Router in the above example.

Question 5: How many steps are there in this process?____.

Question 6: What is the web address where you found this information?

Address: __

Lab continued on next page:

Question 7: With your knowledge acquired from completing this lab, from reading the

course textbook, and by studying the router's user manual, describe how

someone's network security might be compromised by not properly setting up their wireless access point?

Question 8: What are some ways to better secure your installation of the above noted

Linksys model E4200 wireless router access point?
