Our impressions is that when Founding Fathers (such as Hancock, Washington, Jef- ferson, and Franklin, as well as other Patriots) spoke of equality, they appear to have meant being treated as equals with other whites in the British empire (and not, as most of us now would, equality of sexes or races). And, when they spoke of liberty, they seemed to have meant being free to buy up and settle on native lands (a.k.a. land speculation) without British interference, or to trade with minimal taxation (and not, as most of us now would, freedom to chose what goods to buy, what political stances to take, what religion to support, or what ideas to publish). (a) Provide evidence that supports (or refutes) our claim. (b) Suggest some incentives which might have driven the Founding Fathers to hold these particular notions of equality and liberty. (c) Suggest some reasons why common folk (e.g., the average citizen of Boston) might have gone along with, and come to internalize, the ideals espoused by the Founding Fathers
