- The best way to start a behavior modification plan would be to teach the parent the logic behind operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is the cause-and-effect teaching method that reveals the consequences of specific actions. A reinforcer or a stimulus is given to the child when they perform a particular task, increasing the likelihood of them repeating it. Punishment is another method of operant conditioning but is often misused. Most psychologists agree that reinforcement is a better method to teach desirable behavior. Using positive reinforcement and the shaping method, the parent should praise or reward the child every time they present behaviors that lead toward the ultimate goal of completing their homework after school.
- Since Operant is an action performed in an environment with consequences, I would suggest modifying the child's behavior by withholding the child's enjoyable rewards until the homework was done. I would suggest that things such as phone, tablet, or computer time be withheld as well as television until the homework is done then allowing the use of these once the homework is done.Using positive reinforcement, when the homework is done, the child can enjoy their privileged items. Using positive punishment, the items are withheld until the homework is done. This would increase the behavior to finish their homework before any privileged items are received and cease the unruly behavior of ignoring their homework. The schedule I would suggest would be a ratio schedule, the items would be given depending on how many times the homework is finished first.
- Operant conditioning is the form of teaching new habits to the brain. The method used to help learn a new habit can be guided by reinforcement, punishment, or adverse outcomes. Habits are typically formed by how rewarding something is to the individual. With this information, I would attempt to moderate the 10-year-old's behavior by analyzing what the child likes or gains by not doing their homework after school. Once I find out what that is, I can design a reward value to help influence a positive outcome. For example, if the child enjoys video games. I would introduce a reward system that addresses the likes of the child. I would say that every day that the child does their homework after school. They will get to earn their video game time for the day. This reward method creates a short-term reward for instant gratification. A long-term goal, for example, is if they make a week's worth of homework, we can go somewhere on the weekend for a little outing. Also, if they achieve a monthly goal, we can have another reward, maybe a new game. This way, we can reinforce the good habit over a daily, weekly, and monthly time frame. By identifying the trigger, which is not doing the homework, the behavior is doing the assignment, and then the reward is the fun they will haveallowing enough time to change the habits.
- A recent stressful time in my life was working as a Respiratory Therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was very difficult to stay passionate about my work. Physically and mentally I was challenged. I quickly realized that my role was not to educate the public about the virus, but support them in their decisions they made about their body even if I disagreed with it. I found the work difficult to do when really sick people did not believe in the validity of it or do any sort of preventative measures to not obtain the virus. I found comfort in my partner who also works in the health care setting. Talking to someone who understands first hand what I am going through was extremely beneficial for my mental health. He would ask me if I wanted to talk about it after a long shift and respect my privacy when I wasn't ready to. I found a lot of comfort in discussing my feelings with co-workers who were in the trenches with me. I also made physical exercise a priority in my life. I started biking to relieve stress and not feel so anxious. Sweating out my stress helped me be a better provider and sleep better at night. In turn I was more mentally focused for the work day ahead. I have continued to bike 2-3 times a week and have noticed an improvement in my overall health and mood. During this time I temporarily picked smoking back up because I was using emotion based coping strategies because I was exhausted. I also knew I had to do it again the following night. Problem focused coping strategies became problematic because there was nothing more I could do to stop the spread of COVID than educate patients and wear my PPE.
- Hi Class, just to get a gauge of where we are this week, please let me know on this thread:Have you heard of extrinsic and/or intrinsic motivation? (It's okay if you do not know). If not, search these concepts to help you compose a reply. If so, what is your understanding of each of these concepts?
- I had to research the meaning of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Both terms I had never heard about until today. I do have a better understanding of them as of now. Based on my research, intrinsic motivation is the motivation that comes from within oneself to do something. At the same time, extrinsic motivation comes from wanting to gain an external award, for instance, doing something for self-gratification vs. seeking gratification from others. The best example I can give is as a leader, I was able to move up in my career because of my willingness to help others. I help not with the hopes of moving up in my position but because I genuinely like to help others. I believe that what helps me stand out is that I love helping others, and I don't consider it a task to be completed.
- The American culture stratifies its people by race, religion, education level, occupation, wealth, income, and political views but the list can go on forever. I believe society does this in order to create groups. In doing this it gives a sense of mental awareness as to what you may fit into. We can relate with each other based on these groups. For example, I may have the same political views as someone I hang out with but I may choose to not hang out with someone who has a different political view. Stratification creates a challenge among society, without it I don't think there would be any type of competition or challenge for individuals to do better. If society didn't stratify wealth, the poor in reality wouldn't try to do better or look up to the wealthy. The same goes with education, if we didn't stratify education, why would people go to college or take classes past high school?
- The most common ways American culture stratifies people are by wealth, occupation, education, and income. Nowadays, these are the things that people see before they even know the type of person you are which is something really sad that society has created. People tend to judge you just because you don't have a similar income than them. Even with education people who attend to private schools feel like they are on the top of the world which is something that makes me think. How is this make you more or less than someone who is attending a community college? Societies stratify because sometimes that's what their parents thought to do, to feel more powerful just because they have more money than someone else. However, sometimes people can take this as motivation to keep progressing in life which is something everyone should be doing in their lives but always remember where you can from.
