RI prides itself on its responsive and highly trained customer service department that exists in part due to the monthly face-to-face training sessions that all customer service representatives are required to attend. RI plans to continue offering monthly face-to-face meetings but would like to add additional, ongoing opportunities for customer service representatives to collaborate with one another, find answers to frequently asked questions, as well as access a growing collection of electronic resources regarding products. The average age of RI's customer service representatives is 24 and, because they are on computers all day long to process orders, they are very proficient with technology. Scenario 2: Non-profit Organization Professional Development Lampo International (LI) is a non-profit organization seeking to provide training, support, and resources to individuals who serve the deaf and blind population. LI has been offering quarterly, week-long face-to-face training seminars at its New York office for years, but with the increasing cost of travel and the company facing significant funding cuts, LI is looking for another way to provide the much-needed professional development training for the counselors and therapists it serves. Those who have historically participated in LI professional development seminars are adult learners, average age 48 years old, and not very proficient with technology.

Scenario 3: Military Professional Development The National Guard (NG) is a military organization known for being ready to step in at a moment's notice to support the country in a time of crisis. Its success depends upon a highly trained force of soldiers who commit to attending face-to-face training sessions one weekend per month and two additional weeks per year. NG would like to offer additional training modules that soldiers could complete at their convenience when not attending the required face-to-face training. Soldiers will receive additional compensation after completing a particular number of optional training modules, so tracking of learner progress is very important. While the modules should be self-paced, soldiers should also be able to network with one another. The average age of the soldiers is 32 and their technology skills vary.
