For this assignment, you will interview a person in the RA/QO/pharmaceutical industry. You will want to ensure you find someone who has been in the industry at least 5 years. This way, the person will be well versed about the industry and their job (i.e., theyre not simply nine months into a role). The idea behind the assignment is to find out about the industry that you will be working in. Think about what you know already, what you dont know, what you want to know, for example. See the sample questions provided, but feel free to add more or replace some of these questions. After your interview, you will then use this information to write an informal report. Here is the format for the report (no more than 1200 words), which must contain the following headings: SUMMARY In this section you will summarize the key highlights of your interview. Keep this section fairly brief: one paragraph (about one-third of a page). BACKGROUND In this section you will include the following information. the person interviewed location of interview (e.g., coffee shop, workplace, telephone call, Zoom) time and date of interview reason for conducting the interview* *Here, you will include what led up to the writing of the report: course assignment (learning how to write an informal report); need to be current about industry expectations for your field; need to gather information about the workplace environment in Regulatory Affairs and Quality Operations. FINDINGS This is the most difficult section of the report to write. This is where you provide the reader with the information gleaned from the interview. Because you will have different kinds of information to report in this section, you will need to use subheadings. For this report, you will need at least six (6) subheadings. Your subheadings will be generated by the kinds of questions you ask and the information they elicit. For example, lets say that you are interested in how your interviewee got started in the world of Regulatory Affairs, and what kind of training/education he/she has received. A good subheading for this kind of information might be something like Academic and Professional Background. Such a heading is not too specific and not too general. For example, if your subheading was something like Academic Credentials, Previous Work Experience, and Career Choices, this would be awkward and needlessly specific. On the other hand a one-word heading such as Background would be much too vague. What kind of background are we talking about? Neither would a heading like Experience be acceptable. Similarly, it is also too vague. What kind of experience are we talking about? Thus, from this one example, you can see that we need to strike a middle position between the too specific and the too general. Thus, a subheading like Academic and Professional Background prepares readers for what they will read, without being too detailed and cumbersome or too meaningless and abstract. So, the first part of the Findings section in your report might look like this: FINDINGS Academic and Professional Background Mr. Brown said that he completed a PhD in Biology at the University of Toronto, and shortly after began working for Pfizer as a research scientist. However, he grew tired of research and decided on a career change. He quit his job at Pfizer and enrolled in the Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance program at Seneca College. After graduating from Seneca, he got his first job with Health Canada, but once again was dissatisfied. Finally, he settled on a career in Quality Assurance with Merck. He has been at Merck for the past ten years and is now in a supervisory position that he is very happy with. (Note: I would like you to note the style I have used here. Write the report in the third person (i.e., Mr. Brown said...). Do not use a question and response style like you would see in a magazine interview. Do not repeat the questions you asked. Rather, simply report your findings as I have shown you here. Use this third-person style for the Summary, Background, and Findings sections of the report.) OUTCOME In this section you will state the most valuable insights gained from the interview. Think about what you have learned from this whole process and how that either confirms or questions your decision to pursue various aspects of your chosen field. For example, what looks better, a generic drug company or an innovator? Does the work environment look rewarding, exhausting? Are the salary and benefits what you expected? These are just a sample of questions you might ask yourself. You, of course, after the interview will have your own very specific ones. (Note: This will be written in first person.) Your report will be evaluated on its quality of content, organization, and expression. *To confirm the details of your interview, please supply your interviewees full name, company, and phone number/email at the end of the report.
