For your HL110 portfolio projects, you will create and design four chapters of a hospitality leadership guidebook based on each course of the Hospitality Leadership program. The purpose of the guidebook is to assist hospitality organization managers in improving their personal competence to become more effective leaders in the industry.

With the global economy experiencing multiple crises, it is more important than ever for hospitality companies to be one step ahead of potential shocks. As a leader, you realize that it is not always possible to predict a crisis or prevent it from happening, but it is absolutely necessary to know how to manage a crisis. One important lesson is that hospitality managers are expected to strengthen and boost the morale of their staff at a time of crisis.

For Portfolio Project Part 2, you will explore how to motivate your team in times of crises. Refer to your textbook, Chapter 8, pages 197-216, for more information on staff motivation and morale in the hospitality industry, and then respond to the questions below.

1. In your own words, describe what a crisis is. What types of crises might the hospitality industry face in the upcoming year? List at least 3 possible factors for these crises. Explain how they could affect staff motivation and morale.
2. Do some research and based on your findings, list:

• 5 steps that you as a leader should take to maintain employee engagement and boost staff morale during times of crisis. Provide examples.
• 5 things you believe a leader should avoid doing during times of crises. Provide examples. 3. Sometimes a crisis can reveal new opportunities. Write about 2 possible examples (1 paragraph each) in which a hospitality company can use a crisis situation as motivation for positive change within their team or organization.
