INDIRECT (BAD NEWS) LETTER ASSIGNMENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED: 1. Compose workplace documents including emails, letters, and a research report 2. Analyze an audience and tailor a message to that audience 3. Apply principles of grammar, punctuation, and editing appropriate to professional writing 4. Prepare documents according to basic principles of formatting and visual communication in various written documents 5. Demonstrate critical thinking skills in reading, writing, and discussion THE SCENARIO You are a manager at Project Management Solutions, a leading London ON firm. Recently Make-A-Wish Canada has written you a letter requesting that your company be extensively involved with their 2023 campaign. The director of Marketing & Communications, Julie Fiorini, has asked if your organization would like to make a donation.
You've donated substantial sums to this charity in the past and have a great working relationship with themin fact, one of your relatives (a young niece with a chronic heart condition requiring multiple operations) was granted a wish by this very organization a little over two years ago. So, for you, this request is more than a little personal. Unfortunately, because of other charity donations and financial commitments for other projects/equipment, you must refuse Ms. Fiorini's request for any type of monetary donation (please do NOT use this exact sentence in your letter---you are supposed to go into specific details!) Anyway, all that said, you need to find another way to not only help out this great organization but also to maintain goodwill.
THE TASK Write a properly formatted, indirect pattern formal letter to Julie Fiorini informing her of the situation and of the necessity of refusing her request.
Please provide fictional details as required, and do not forget the indirect "bad news" organizational structure of Buffer, Reasons, Bad News, and Close. Refer to in-class Power Points for more detail concerning potential ways to pull this off tactfully. Remember: your goal is to maintain goodwill as well as to avoid appearing like a slobbering, over-apologetic buffoon. In fact, the best letters will open with key details from the actual Make-A-Wish website ("story" testimonies or corporate events) and will offer no less than TWO alternatives to donating money. Remember: this is an advanced communications course, so expectations for a full letter teaming with warmth and specific details are high.
NOTE: It goes without saying that if you don't know anything about Make-A-Wish Canada, now is the time to learn. Don't suggest or write about irrelevant or inappropriate content. You'll only embarrass yourself and get a bad grade.
