Labor markets have a huge impact on staffing policies, practices and more importantly the job candidates experience looking for a job. I have selected some older readings on the subject hoping that you'll compare your experiences with those described in the readings. To add a bit more to the articles, I would like to relate a story:
I was in college during the dot-com boom working as a software engineer for a global software company. Headhunters would call every so often, trying to get me to come and work for a different organization and I was just a non-traditional student who hadn't even graduated from college yet! (not a commentary on my skills and abilities, rather on the market's demand for a warm body).
I could really do anything I wanted at work. I recall thinking, as did many of my colleagues, "what's the worst thing they could do, fire me?". Needless to say, things are quite a bit different in today's market. However, though distant this may seem, we know that labor markets swing on pendulums and we may one day experience a similar market again.
This week's forum is kind of fun. You will be sharing job interview and job application experiences and connecting the stories you tell to a supplemental readings which you find. Then also make a connection to one of the assigned readings or the concepts presented in your HR text, specifically chapter 4.
After reading chapter 4 in your HR text, and reading the assigned articles please do the following:
1. Read the Nolan, (2000) article and briefly describe how any of the points brought up in the article might be different if it were written this year instead of 2000. What if any of the points are still relevant or not so relevant?
2. Share an experience that you or someone you know has had while applying for or interviewing for a job that could be shared as a positive or negative example of what is discussed in any of the supplemental articles. Be sure to cite which article. Then connect your experience and the article to principles outlined in the text book.
3. What are the big findings of the Cappelli & Keller (2013) article and how do they impact an organizations approach meeting its staffing needs?
Be sure to focus on quality and cite using APA formatting.
In short, tell us an interesting story and connect it to at least one article and one principle in the text. Then find a supplemental article from outside the assigned readings that is related somewhat to the module theme and share a "rich nugget" from it.
Also, think about how these stories told from an employee perspective might be seen differently from a managerial perspective? How could we use these experiences to be better managers?
