Four GAC beds operate in parallel and are equally staggered. The GAC beds each have an apparent density of 500g/L, and in one year, each GAC bed processes 10,000 bed volumes of water. Up to 1 year, the TOC-Time curve for an individual bed can be approximated by the expression y=2x2+1, where y=TOC(mg/L), and x= time (years). From 1 year to 2 years, the curve is described by y=2(2x)2+5. (a) Determine the Carbon Utilization Rate if only one GAC bed is used, and the bed is taken out of service when the TOC=2.04mg/L. (b) Draw an integral curve (i.e., a maximum effluent concentration curve) for four beds operating in parallel, with equal staggering. Plot the conditions for the staggered GAC bed lives equal to either (i) 0.6 , or (ii) 1.0, or (iii) 1.5 years. What GAC bed life would you select in order to achieve a maximum composite (average) effluent of 2.04mg/L ? (c) Place on a figure the effluent TOC curves from GAC bed 3 and GAC bed 4 , for the stagger times that you choose for achieving a maximum TOC effluent of 2.04mg/L. (d) Also identify on a figure what would be the composite (average) effluent concentration from the four beds together. Start this curve from the time that the 4th bed is placed in service, and continue it out until 2.0 years. (e) Determine the CUR for each GAC bed when the four are operated in parallel under the above selected conditions
