Fred had done a masterful job establishing a leadership team in good times. He established deacons who did what deacons were supposed to doserve. He provided the freedom for his staff to function within their roles. He encouraged the church family to lead in service. This preparation was invaluable in leading through the crisis. Despite the chaos, members knew the roles they were to fulfill. Rich reflected on the pastor's leading of the church in his own personal ministry: "[It] wasn't the first time you were stepping into these shoes and going, 'Now what in the world do I do?'" Pastor Fred had allowed his staff to serve in instrumental leadership roles, thereby preparing them to take the helm. He had afforded this opportunity to the lay leaders as well, which helped them formulate a leadership strategy.
