Freedom of Expression

The concept of freedom of expression in the digital age with the Internet is dictated by the local government and the rights of their people. Various countries globally have created laws that restrict the freedom of expression, not only verbally but also virtually, visibly, non-verbally, and symbolically.

Countries such as Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Uganda, and Zimbabwe also all invoke particularly strong censorship and suppression around the topic of freedom of expression.

But what obligations do Platform providers such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Vimeo, WhatsApp, Tumblr, and TikTok have regarding Freedom of Expression? Especially around the topics of Hate, Pornography, and Fake News?

Your assignment is to complete a short paper on this topic. The paper should be a minimum of three hundred (300) to a maximum of six hundred (600) words in length.

In your paper, compare & contrast the local governmental regulations to the position of platforms. To simplify this exercise, pick a one (1) country and pick one (1) Platform to analyze and report on. In addition, your paper should also include what your opinion & position is on this topic. Specifically, are the governmental laws in the country selected over or under reaching? For the Platform selected, do the same, is the position taken over or under reaching?

Utilize and cite the course textbook and/or one (1) additional credible or scholarly source to support your analysis and positions. The ASU Library is a good place to find credible and scholarly sources. Assignment Submission
