From 1930 to 1932, LaPiere traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada with a young Chinese student and the student s wife. They visited 67 hotels and 184 restaurants, usually with the Chinese man making the arrangements with the hotel or asking for a table at the restaurant. Only once were they refused service (at a hotel), and typically they were received in a perfectly reasonable manner. Interestingly, the one time they were refused, the owner of the establishment saw the Chinese couple and said "No, I don t take Japs!" LaPiere then surveyed the very hotels and restaurants they had visited. The survey included questions which directly asked whether the establishments would serve members of various ethnic groups (remember, discrimination was legal then). The reply was an unequivocal "No" from over 90 percent of the businesses which responded, and the rest said it would depend on the circumstances.
