Research Question

You must fill in and use one of the two following examples, depending on whether you plan to do a Linear Regression (LR) or Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). In your question, youll be naming the specific variables in your data file that youll be analyzing.

ANOVA analysis Notice that you are comparing the averages of two different categories:

I am going to compare VARIABLE1 among groups defined by VARIABLE2 to understand QUESTION.

ANOVA Example: I am going to compare SALARY among groups defined by GENDER to understand Is there a statistically significant difference between the salaries of Women versus Men for the same job type?

OR

Linear Regression Analysis Notice you are comparing two different sets of numbers to see if one is the predictor of the other.

I am going to determine if VARIABLE1 predicts VARIABLE2 to answer QUESTION.

LR Example: I am going to determine if CALCIUMDOSE predicts SATSCORE to answer, "Is calcium intake in mg/day a significant predictor of students SAT scores?

The Research Question stated as a statistical equation:

ANOVA:

• H₀: ₁ = ₂ = ... = _n
• H_A: Not all means are equal (i.e. _{1 2} or _{2 3} ... _{1 n})
