From the syllabus:
Case studies provide excellent hands-on opportunities for students to apply skills learned in this course, as well as others from your MBA. There will be 3 cases assigned to teams of 2 or 3 students this semester. Each case may relate to a particular topic or combine several topics in an integrative manner. For each case, you should read it, attempt the analysis, answer the questions at the end of the case, and prepare your recommendations. Each team will be expected to present their viewpoint on each case and actively participate in the class discussion. Each case study is worth 7% of your overall course grade.
Our third case study is: Carestream Health Inc.: When Disruption Hits a Lean Supply Chain. This case study can be found in the 'Content' section of iLearn, for 'Week 15'.
You have been randomly assigned to groups of 2 (you should be able to see which group you are in by looking at 'Groups' in the left-hand column, let me know if any confusion at all). Please work together to analyze this case study and respond to the following questions:
- How were lean management principles applied in CHX's supply chain?
- What were the drivers of variability in CHX's supply chain?
- From a supply chain management perspective, what were the managerial problems caused by the labor dispute in the West Coast ports?
- What were the possible options to address these problems? Were they all feasible? Why or why not?
- If you were a manager in the meeting, what would you propose to address the two outstanding questions at the end of the case, i.e. determining when to airfreight and calculating how much it would cost?
